Frequently asked questions

Is the MTN reward real?

Yes — MTN is part of the live reward catalog in South Africa, and real players redeem it every day. We never ask you to pay to redeem.

How fast does the MTN reward arrive?

Rewards are delivered digitally after you redeem — most arrive within minutes, though some can take a little longer.

How much can I earn?

It depends on how much you play and how many reward boxes you open. Halo Mini doesn't promise fixed earnings — but playing is always free.

Do I have to pay or deposit anything?

No. Halo Mini is free to download, free to play and free to redeem. No purchase is ever required.

How do I get free MTN airtime?

On Halo Mini you collect points from mini games and short video ads, then redeem MTN airtime in R5, R10, R20 or R50, with no purchase needed. Earnings are not fixed. MTN's own options are not free: XtraTime (*136*2# or *151#) is a loan you repay plus R1.10 for every R10, or part of R10, from your next recharge, and YelloBucks, earned at 1 per R1 you spend, can be swapped for MTN to MTN airtime.

Is there an MTN spin and win for airtime?

MTN's daily game is Play and Win in YelloBucks. Every customer gets at least two free plays a day on the MTN App or *234#, with prizes such as discounted bundles and retail vouchers. MTN's terms pages still list an older Spin 'n Win that started in November 2017 and only gave spins after you bought a qualifying bundle. We did not find a current version on MTN's site.

How to get MTN airtime on Halo Mini

Halo Mini is a free rewards app. You collect points by playing short mini games and watching short video ads. You can then redeem MTN airtime in R5, R10, R20 or R50. No purchase or deposit is needed. Halo Mini does not promise fixed earnings. Halo Mini is an independent app and is not affiliated with or endorsed by MTN.

The airtime goes straight to the phone number you enter when you redeem. There is no voucher PIN to load. In the 30 days to 25 September 2026, the median time from redeeming to delivery was under a minute. That is a median, so some orders can take longer.

Before you confirm, check the number digit by digit and make sure it is on MTN. If you moved your number from another network, choose the network it is on now.

  • Networks in South Africa: Vodacom, MTN, Telkom and Cell C
  • Amounts: R5, R10, R20 and R50
  • Delivery: straight to the number you enter, with no PIN to load
  • Cost: no purchase or deposit

MTN's own ways to get airtime without cash

Two official MTN options are XtraTime, an advance you pay back, and YelloBucks, its rewards programme with a free daily Play and Win game. This is what MTN's own pages say.

XtraTime lets you take airtime, voice, data or social bundles now and pay later. MTN adds a service fee of R1.10 for every R10 advanced, or part of R10. When you next recharge, the advance and the fee come off automatically. MTN's XtraTime page says the full advance plus the fee must be repaid before another advance is available.

YelloBucks are points. You earn 1 YelloBuck for every R1 you spend with MTN. Once your YelloBucks profile is active, MTN's terms say you get at least two free Play and Win plays a day on the MTN App or by dialling *234#. Prizes include discounted data and voice bundles and retail vouchers.

  • XtraTime: dial *136*2# or *151#, or open the MTN App, then select XtraTime.
  • Who qualifies: you need to have been active on MTN for at least 3 months, with total recharges of R20 or more a month for the past 3 months. MTN also looks at SIM registration and how often you recharge.
  • Paying it back: load airtime or buy a data bundle directly. You have 30 days. Paying late may lower how much XtraTime you can get.
  • Auto Top-Up: an opt-in XtraTime setting that recharges you on credit when your balance runs low (R1.50 for airtime). The normal fee applies. To switch it off, dial *136#, select XtraTime, then Auto Top-Up.
  • YelloBucks: activate your profile on *234# or in the MTN App. The programme is for active MTN customers aged 16 or older who are South African citizens or permanent residents.
  • Airtime from YelloBucks: MTN's terms list R10 airtime at 1,000 YelloBucks, and redeemed airtime is for MTN to MTN calls only.
  • Keep your YelloBucks active: after 60 days without activity, MTN charges 150 YelloBucks a month.
  • Play and Win: at least two free plays a day. MTN sets the prizes, and they depend on your recharge tier.

Avoid fake free-airtime offers

MTN says its agents will never ask for your OTP, passwords or card PIN. If an SMS or email has a link, MTN suggests you search for the website yourself instead of tapping it. No one needs your PIN or OTP to send you airtime.

Some MTN Play games that mention airtime prizes are paid subscriptions. My City, for example, lists R5 a day after a one-day free trial. Check the price before you subscribe. Dial *123# to manage your subscriptions.

  • Never share an OTP, PIN or password, even with someone who says they work for MTN.
  • Do not pay or buy vouchers to claim a prize.
  • Be wary of links that promise unlimited airtime.
  • Report fraud to MTN on 083 123 4357 or fraudhelp@mtn.com.
